Did you know that the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) has acknowledged that having a doulas continuous support throughout labor can not only reduce the likelihood of many common interventions, but it can also help reduce pain during labor and increases the mothers satisfaction with her birth?
A doula is a trained professional who provides continuous non-medical, but physical, emotional and informational support to a mother throughout pregnancy, through labor and delivery, and in the early post-partum time after birth.
Here at The Silver Linings Foundation, we started the doula scholarship program because we believe that everyone that wants a doula deserves the opportunity to have a doula.
There are many reasons to hire a doula to provide support throughout pregnancy, labor and birth, and post-partum. Unfortunately, most health insurance companies will not cover the expense of a doula, which can leave many expecting women unable to hire a doula due to cost.
The scholarship program established by the Silver Linings Foundation allows qualifying expectant mothers the chance to have the support of a doula, regardless of the social or financial status. We review each scholarship application on a case by case basis. Scholarships vary in size and in some cases they will completely cover the expenses of hiring a doula, while at other times it will cover only a portion of the expenses. The scholarship fund relies on donations and fundraisers to make this all possible, and we sincerely appreciate the support we have gotten from the community.
